A: The Edward M. Dowd Foundation’s mission is to support the growth and preservation of the history, art, and culture that benefit communities within the region of Monterey County, Salinas, in particular, and Santa Clara County, the Edward M. Dowd Art History Building at Santa Clara University, in particular, within California. By offering grants to provide scholarships, programs, professorships, and other opportunities, the foundation aims to support and improve the community. The foundation’s main core focus areas include arts and education, health and human service, and programs that support veterans.

Q: Who was Edward M. Dowd?

A: Born in San Francisco and raised in Salinas, Edward M. Dowd was a native Californian with a passion for giving back to his community. After serving in the Air Force and graduating from Santa Clara University, Ed Dowd entered real estate investment, eventually founding his own property investment company and a bank in California. At age 47, his life changed drastically after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was after his diagnosis, Ed Dowd became passionate about philanthropy and became more involved with supporting his community. Q: How is the Foundation organized?

A: The Foundation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the code and sections 214 and 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code, as amended. No substantial part of the activities of this Foundation shall consist of carrying out propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, except as provided in Section 501(h) of the code. The Foundation shall not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office.
